While virtual reality has been available to consumers for more than 20 years, it doesn’t seem like it caught on too well until recently. Companies like Google Cardboard, Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR have made virtual reality more mainstream, and now everyone is trying to get some action.

YouVisit, a company with the mission of showing you the world, has developed one of the world’s largest collections of interactive virtual reality content. In fact, they have made it possible for user-generated virtual reality experiences, giving individuals, educational institutions and business all over the world the opportunity to create their own virtual reality content.

Providing what some are quoting to be the “industry’s highest resolution VR experience,” YouVisit has formulated an algorithm said to be viewed at almost five times the resolution of other standard virtual reality content. The visuals are said to be so realistic, that users almost forget that they never left their living room.

YouVisit’s algorithm cuts down download times and allows each experience to be powered at a higher resolution but at a much lower bandwidth. This takes place by allowing the user experience to transform how the algorithm actually works. The solution is creating the natural human vision from the user’s perspective. The algorithm is based on the direction that the user is looking and maps itself, based on the peripherals outside of the user’s view.

Most devices are simply not compatible with quality resolutions when it comes to virtual reality. This technology requires too much bandwidth and resolution for virtual reality to reach its full potential. For this, YouVisit went straight to the chopping block and came up with their solution to those problems within the virtual space. The solution will be made public during the second quarter.

As it’s a wide-open market, there are many opportunities for businesses entering the virtual reality marketplace. Real estate companies, for example, may better show off properties to onlookers without wasting time meeting with clients, who aren’t serious about buying. Travel agencies can better show off resorts and landmark locations.

Educational institutions are already presenting students with virtual field trips at many museums and locations around the world. In fact, Google has been working with many school districts around the world, testing and optimizing their virtual reality experiences by providing students with cutting-edge “field trip” technologies, making virtual reality a part of their daily educational experience.

In more recent news, Quantico, a television series on ABC’s primetime starring “Miss World” Priyanka Chopra, partnered with Lexus and kicks off a midseason premiere with a scripted 360-degree experience. The Takedown episode is a three-and-a-half minute experience that leads tech-savvy viewers through a virtual reality tour within the backseat of the new Lexus LX 570 SUV. The viewers will become a part of the team at Quantico and get closer to solving case through the virtual reality experience, as a new recruit.  

A Disney-owned broadcast network, ABC is one of the first to bridge virtual reality to such an engaging television event. With companies like Disney, Google, YouVisit Sony and Samsung leading the virtual reality markets, technologies are sure to evolve at a rapid pace. As smart and responsive cities continue to expand across the globe, LinkNYC has emerged as one of the most innovative moves yet in evolving the New York Metro Area. As the company begins to roll out free gigabit Wi-Fi across the city, we are enamored with everything that comes with it.

A city full of Millennials and the need to accommodate outdoor charging ports, LinkNYC has stepped it up a notch, as they knock out over 7500 payphones around the five-city borough and install multiple technology kiosks in their place. Connected by superfast citywide Wi-Fi, these “Links” serve as information stations, communication platforms and even city directories.

Paid (NewsAlert) for by advertising, Links are powered by highly effective OOH advertising networks and will be sustained on revenue alone. What is said to be a “rich, context aware platform,” all Links will feature digital signage on 55” HD displays and will bring the city over half a billion a year in revenue. These totems, as ZDNet has labeled them, will not be a burden to tax payers, as funding will be generated from partners, supporters and advertisers directly.

Sponsored by The City of NY and CityBridge, personal devices can be used with the systems. USB ports will allow for on-the-go charging and lead the city to become a more efficient and safer place to live. 9-11 will be a short swipe away and public service announcements will be immediately posted to warn passersby of harm in the immediate area.

Each kiosk will have a tablet to access e-mail, browsing the Web and a Vonage (NewsAlert) app for telephone calls. Users will have to provide their own headphones, however, or everyone else nearby will hear the conversation. Tons of new apps are set to rollout over the next ten years and are expected to bring continued innovation to communities all over the Big Apple. Connectivity is said to be 100 or more times faster than LTE (NewsAlert) servicing and standard public Wi-Fi… even at 150 feet away.

CItyBridge, a New York-based technology company, is comprised of technology experts, media professionals and communication groups, who are focusing on connectivity and the user experience. The companies forging together under this entity are Intersection, QUALCOMM and Civiq Smartscapes. The company is led by a parent company, Titan Outdoor. With this powerhouse behind them, Links are now considered “for New Yorkers, by New Yorkers.”

With the growing concern for security and privacy, CityBridge only collects data related to logins and passwords that access their system. And while they do collect complex analytics to better improve and maximize their servicing, data remains anonymous to the user so that nothing will become identifiable to any particular user within the system. Better yet, this information will not be sold.

According to ZDNet, The City of New York will be simultaneously be implementing free broadband service to households all over the city. From now through 2019, a proposed minimum of 100mbps will be delivered through each network and will keep the city connected to the rest of the world.  While directly unaffiliated with Links, power to Link towers will be made possible. The move to implement citywide broadband servicing will cost the city $500M, matched by $500M from a private source. It seems that after Links have been positioned, broadband servicing will pay for it. Now, that’s smart.

Predictions for Real Estate 2016: How Agents and Facilities Managers Will Benefit

Planon, a software provider in support of workplace optimization and Integrated Workplace Management Systems (IWMS), has released their predictions in Real Estate and Facility Management efficiencies for 2016.

“Many of the trends that will come into focus in 2016 already exist today, but their significance is expected to grow and become mainstream in the near future,” states David Karpook, Strategic Business Consultant at Planon. “Today’s facilities management and real estate managers face an increasing need to respond to the evolution of technology and sustainability, ensure compliance, and increase cost efficiency.” 

Planon predicts that IoT opportunities will be made more applicable to the Real Estate spectrum in 2016. Therefore, it will be increasingly adopted by agents all over the world. Bottom lines will increase with the placement of affordable sensor technologies. Analytics data will be easily collected through occupancy of the workplace or meeting room. Additional IoT implementations point to better utilization of smart screens triggered by in app functionality or by room sensors, alone.

In the case of real estate, the amount of time an onlooker spends in each room may translate to sales potential, funneling sales interest data collected during the time spent in each room, individually. This data can be used to physically enhance the features that potential buyers enjoy the most and call out the needs for improvement in areas that guests most dislikes on the property. Doing so will lead real estate companies towards increased sales and shortened periods of closing. It will also provide insight as to where, exactly, a visitor may actually lose interest.

Workspaces can be checked for availability within a facility through the scanning of QR codes or the swiping of RFID tags.  This will save time and face, while meeting with clients in a busy conference space.

Much of 2016 will see an increase in the use of mobile technologies for just about every phase in daily process. Not only are individuals now using mobile devices to make and accept payments on the go, but also team collaboration and communication can more frequently be made feasible. Integrations in communications tools are now allowing for better project management and workforce productivity through in-app tools and centralized clouds, allowing users to stay in just one application all day without the need to toggle between apps to complete a single function.

In fact, Cloud delivery models will continue to transform the workplace,” claims the Boston-based software company. They will cut costs significantly for IT departments and eliminate the need for big-bulky equipment. Although true, there are many big businesses that are still skeptical about adopting cloud-based technologies in storing proprietary information.

Through mobility, employers are seeing more stretch-room in the physical workplace and may even save on operating costs with the ability to downgrade unnecessary expenditures. With flexible schedules, the workforce is being made more available at untraditional business hours and increasingly made available through “always on” technologies.

Workers are less stressed and therefore more productive. According to Planon, “More than 90 percent of respondents in research agreed that new workplace concepts will improve employee productivity.”

Finally, Planon predicts that building information modeling, BIM, will continue to increase in adoption. Their claim is that it will hold great promise for facilities management and real estate in the very near future.

Applying BIM and its methodologies to operations will allow more efficiency in management of the building space. This includes maintenance and construction during lifecycle process in providing a platform for real-time collaboration, logistics and quality management. Agents and construction superintendents will, themselves, be able to better predict the future of their own real estate empire.

Smart businesses and smart buildings will continue to make their presence known through the adoption of IoT and cloud technologies, allowing employees to be more mobile and embracing the alternative workplace. BIM-culture will become a norm, as teams will be impacted by better communications and interactive visuals in which promote efficiency.
